It’s all about that bass, apparently. Well according to Meghan Trainor’s whose latest song has sparked up the long-standing debate on body image.
So is it a song about skinny shaming, or just a harmless and catching tune about a girl being confident in her own skin? I’ll let you debate amongst yourselves but here’s what I think.
I think we all need to take the PC sticks from out of our you know wheres for a second and face facts. This world has gone mad with being inoffensive, unprovoking and fence-sitting. There are people fighting battles that don’t even concern them and offence being taken left, right, and centre.
Nothing can be said without someone feeling insulted but this song wasn’t meant to wound anyone’s ego.
It is a song about accepting who you are. She is embracing her OWN body, it is her OWN empowerment song. Everyone is going on about skinny shaming and how she is picking on those blessed with slim figures, but that is really not what it’s about.
“I’m bringing booty back
Go ahead and tell them skinny bitches that
No, I’m just playing. I know you think you’re fat
But I’m here to tell ya
Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top. “
It’s this verse that really has people’s pants in a twist. In my opinion I think she’s maybe calling out girls who have called her fat in the past.
I have seen lovely slim girls pinching the skin on their perfectly flat stomachs, moaning, upset with how fat they are. I couldn’t help but scoff and think if they are fat then I am the size of Jupiter. It is an irritating thing to hear when you wish you looked like them, but they clearly have body issues just like me, just like all of us.
People need to wake up and see the problem! It isn’t about who’s fat and who’s thin and who offended whom, it’s about being comfortable in our own skins. We need to stop commenting on people’s size. We are all built differently, I mean I’m 5ft 1 and have absolutely no bum, but I shake it like you wouldn’t believe. I have learnt that me being ashamed of my body isn’t going to help me.
Confidence is the most valuable thing you will ever learn.
You wonder why obesity is a problem, why anorexia and bulimia are still occurring? It is because we need to change our own minds. There shouldn’t be labels such as ‘normal’ or ‘optimum’ because no two people are the same-we should all just be healthy and happy with who we are.
If we were all a little more considerate and confident in our own bodies then maybe this would never be an issue.
Stop shaming and start praising.
The main point she is raising is that we are all beautiful: “Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top”
So to people getting bent out of shape about this song, cool it. Just appreciate it for what it is: a girl expressing herself through music, and face it, it’s a catchy tune.
It is too much to ask for everyone to just be kind to each other?
Take a leaf out of this girls book…
