Quentin Tarantino, the celebrated director of some of the best films ever made, the man who claims the respect of so many moviegoers around the world, the only artist who can provide unique flavour that no one else can quite imitate, has decided to shelve his next project The Hateful Eight due to a script leak.
For many of you this is not recent news, with the story breaking in late January of this year, in summary the controversial film maker gave the script for his new film to certain people and somehow it later ended up on the internet for all to see. In a rage the filmmaker declared that the project would be immediately shelved. In an interview with Deadline he explained “I’m not making this next. I’m going to publish it, and that’s it for now. … I’ll move on to the next thing. I’ve got 10 more where that came from.”
The film would have been a western, concentrating on the events following a stagecoach diversion which traps a dangerous group of people together with one another in a saloon in the middle of nowhere. With characters such as a competing pair of bounty hunters, a renegade confederate soldier and a female prisoner, the film would have no doubt been something to behold, embracing steadily increasing tension as the eponymous “hateful eight” begin to mistrust one another more and more, hopefully culminating in a bloodbath as Tarantino’s works tend to.
You might think that Tarantino is furious that anyone on the net could find out for themselves what really happens in his latest film, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Talking to Deadline once again he explains “I wouldn’t want it any other way. I like the fact that people like my shit, and that they go out of their way to find it and read it. But I gave it to six motherfucking people!” So whilst there is the messy business of professionals not being able to keep such a story to themselves, don’t let that stop you from indulging your curiosity, if you can find the bloody thing.
Your only alternative is to move heaven and earth to travel back in time to the live reading that Tarantino held for one night only this Saturday on April 19th at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. The script was read by an impressive cast, some long time collaborators with Tarantino, others new to performing his work. They were Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Dern, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen, James Remar and Amber Tamblyn, working with little more than their own acting ability, the audience’s imagination and the occasional “Blam Blam!” from narrator Quinten Tarantino. Unfortunately no video footage exists, so the version of this film that was performed only exists in the memory of those who witnessed it.
The fate of The Hateful Eight is something that no one can guess at the moment, whether the film will fade from everyone’s memory, including Tarantino’s or begin shooting next winter season as the director originally intended is something he may not even know himself yet. The director himself explained before the live reading on Saturday that his work was “a first draft, and there will be a second, and a third.” So with any luck, perhaps we may see The Hateful Eight coming to screens sooner than we thought, but only time will tell.
